The Serpent Column
This is one of the oldest pieces of art in İstanbul. The heads of 3 snakes entwined wih each other formed the feet of a cauldron. The thirty one Greek cities thant defealted by Persians in the 5th century B. C. Melted the bronze trophies they acguired and constructed this artwork of unique quality. The Snake Pillar, which is eight meters long was originally erected in the Temple of Apollo in Delhi. It was broght by Emperor Constantine in 324. It was erected in the middle of the Hippodrome. One piece of the snake heads which were lost in the 17th century is exhibited in the Museum of Archaeology in İstanbul.
